Filter Press
What
is a filter press?
This
is a tool, which is commonly used in industries like mining in
separation processes. To be specific, it is used in the separation of
solid and liquid – a slurry pump provides the necessary pressure.
The mechanism involved in the use of filter press is fixed volume and
of batch operations. By batch operations, it is meant that a fixed
volume of mix is put in the press which separates the liquid and the
solid and discharges the filter cake. Only after this batch has been
discharged can the next batch be started.
What
are the components of filter press?
A
filter press has two components, which are the filter pack and the
skeleton. The skeleton is the outside structure which holds the
filter pack together. There is a filtration chamber in the filter
pack in which the pressure develops for the separation process. As it
is a fixed volume tool, the chamber is able to hold only specific
volumes of solids.
What
are the common applications of filter press?
The
various uses of filter press range from blood plasma purification to
dewatering of mineral mining slurries. Specifically in ultrafine
coal dewatering, filter press is popular for filtrate recovery in
coal preparation plants. This tool is known to be the most reliable
and effective technique in metallurgy plant operations. Pilot scale
plate filter press is a famous example for good use of filter press
in dewatering coal slurries. It is also seen that with the use of
filter press, the quality of water recovered in quite improved. This
water is generally used for equipment cleaning.
Also
filter press is used for municipal waste sludge dewatering- for these
primarily automatic membrane filter presses are used. The other uses
include metal concentrate recovery, ready mix concrete water recovery
and large scale fly ash pond dewatering.
Sugaring
operations make use of filter press in processes like production of
maple syrup and others – essentially used in raw syrup filtration
process.
